    Bombs over Baghdad
Alright, I'm sure everyone is aware that there are countless troops serving around the world protecting America's interests and the interests of the Free World. Thank you to each and every one of you. Thank you to my brother Dan-O who served and is my personal hero. (He doesn't read this, so he won't get embarassed.) But seriously, thank you to all the guys that kept him alive. Because I know this guy. It couldn't have been easy.

Having said that, I recently discovered the incredible number of civilians in Iraq. Holy Cow. (if there is such a creature). When did the military begin outsourcing so much of it's work IN THE WAR ZONE???? Granted, these folks are paid handsomely if they survive and most of them are in it for the money. But they live very similar lives to our brothers in arms, just without the arms. Hmmm....I'd be the one saying, "hey, how come he gets a gun and I don't?" Although they DO get the same trendy Camo Kevlar vests and covers that are so in style this year. ;)

So, to the guys who are running support staff for our boys and girls in Desert Camo, thanks. I know you're in it for the money, but I'm sure once you get there you see the importance of what you do. Even if it is sitting around for a long time smoking videogame crack and chatting online. But really, as an essential part of what has become a complicated mission, you're like an unsung hero who's getting paid really well. Be careful. Stay inside. Wear the vest and cover.

    finally friday...
Hello to all you Kiwi's living in Montemartre. Sounds like you're having a blast and making sure trouble never wanders too far away...

Any one up for Chinese? No, it's not Atkins-friendly, low-carb, or on any diet, but mmmm...sesame chicken. Nobody? ok.....Start decorating the Pub next week. Can't wait to see these snowboard benches. Course, it's gonna be hard to make them with the snowboards in my office.

Just wiped out on the ice. The feet flying out from under you, crack your head on ice kind of fall. Where you lay on the ice for a minute and think, "am I still alive? Of course I am! It can't possibly hurt this much to be dead." But then I got up because I was laying in the road and getting run over by a car might hurt worse.

So, yes. I've gone thru my luggage...as have several members of TSA. Not happy. A bunch of stuff is missing. :( Time for a nasty letter to the authorities. A big BOOO HISSS to all of you guys that took stuff from my luggage.

What else....contemplating buying a dartboard for my office. Seriously. Found a mini one at Wal-green's today when I was buying Theraflu. So I'm sick, I'm tired, and I just wiped out on the road.
But the cool thing is I'm done with work in a few hours and I'm getting Chinese food in half of an hour!!!!!!!

    work...sucks
ahhh, back at the desk. chilling like a villain. only got the coffee shop open, so that's cool. gotta get ready for the whole rock the house this month. just over 3 weeks to go....grrr...

captain tom petty and i are going to sail around cape horn so he can get his ear pierced.
or so he says. we shall see. first mate kate. i like the ring of that.

had lunch yesterday with my parents, my sister, and my mom's godfather. I think. i'm not sure who Leland is, but he's really cool. everyone go out and make friends with someone 80 years old, they know everything, have been everywhere, and done everything. and he knows all of the restaurants in town and which ones are good and which ones are great. i have a new hero in my life and his name is Leland.

it's only 2:30 and i get to leave work. how cool. had to be here at 5:30 am. not cool. but i've got 2 weeks to catch up on everything i didn't get to do when i started so that's a huge weight off.

    new year's resolution #1 - live like i'm dying
new year's resolution #2 - lose the weight and get back in shape!
new year's resolution #3 - write my Grandmother EVERY SINGLE MONTH. on paper.
new year's resolution #4 - learn to snowboard

    wish me luck!

NEWS FLASH: DROP BEARS SPOTTED IN USA!
the vicious and terrifying drop bear has finally slipped by immigration officials and is now terrozing the USA. once endangered, this prodigious species has become increasingly active in its search for new prey. having conquered Australia and succeeded in causing an entire nation to begin carrying steel umbrellas, the drop bear has now become a force to be reckoned with in the US. officials fear that these ingenious creatures will crush important political and social figures if allowed to to procreate. a drop bear-hunt is underway at this time to eradicate this possibility.

for the average individual, there is no hope. the drop bear is not noticed until it is already upon you, having fallen from some great height to crush its prey. reputed to be a cousin of the vicious wild koala bear, the drop bear can achieve massive proportions, equal to that of a polar bear. steel umbrellas will be distributed to those people on the protected list. to enable yourself and protect you and your loved ones from these throwbacks to pre-historic times, view the websites below.

    God be with you.

oh God, will it ever stop raining?
Title of a song by Saw Doctors. The thing is, it doesn't rain in Scotland. Nope, the clouds just spit on you. Repeatedly. Pu-tooie. And you can cross the street and it won't be raining (cloud spit). And people carry umbrellas up even when it's not raining because maybe they'll turn the corner and BAM! it'll just be pouring down. Maybe that's how Susan came to walk as though chased by sharks. She must be running to avoid the rain. Funny though, she never wears her hood and we have YET to grab one of the countless umbrellas that are about the flat. She MADE me buy a "proper coat" and yes, it was warm, but I never wore the hood up because I hate hoods and besides, the howling banshee wind rips it off your head just in time for the clouds to spit on you.

I went down to the tourist place this AM to get some pamphlets for my Mom and Dad about touring Scotland and greatly enjoyed the stroll...no sharks in evidence anyway. Susan's on the phone with them just now because she's headed to tropical Northern Ireland to spend New Year's Eve. (which is Hogmanay here...don't know if there are strange hog rituals involved, but apparently it's a big to-do...damn, and I'll just miss it)Mom's sure Susan's going to get blown up even though there's not been any massive blasts in recent years. Susan has a way of picking volatile hot spots to spend cheery holidays. They've now dissolved into a detailed discussion about the Ireland/Northern Ireland separation. Dad keeps calling it all Ireland....and Suz goes nuts every time he does.

    a long december
    i love this song.

a long december by counting crows

A long december and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can’t remember the last thing that you said as you were leaven’
Now the days go by so fast
And it’s one more day up in the canyons
And it’s one more night in hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven...i wish you would
The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it’s all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl
And it’s one more day up in the canyons
And it’s one more night in hollywood
If you think you might come to california...i think you should
Drove up to hillside manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her
And it’s been a long december and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass
And it’s one more day up in the canyon
And it’s one more night in hollywood
It’s been so long since I’ve seen the ocean...i guess I should

YEAH!!! lunch with Stephen. whom i've not seen in over a year. i'm so excited. we were at Purdue at the same time and ran round Lafayette probably causing more trouble than good. but what's the fun in being good when it's so much work? especially when you're in college...

have a great day all and take care.

    chased by sharks...
suz and i went shopping for new year's eve outfits today. running round glasgow as though chased by sharks. i think what i will miss most about Paris is the leisurely pace that susan walked at, just strolling around paris. now that we're back on her home turf, she's running thru the streets at a good clip. i trailed along after her today, not really trying to keep up so she had to keep stopping and waiting on me. :)

we're doing a week and a half of laundry right now. watching "Gangs of New York" and occasionally still flipping thru pictures on our digi cams. probably going to post some more tonight after awhile. after i try and figure out what has happened that nothing will fit into my cases. i think my suitcases have shrunk, because i can't get everything back in! and that's after giving susan her stuff from my cases. hmmm....mom? any suggestions?

at any rate, tomorrow's my last day in glasgow. the shops here close at 6 pm, so i didn't get my outfit just yet. then thursday i'll trek cross-country (which isn't saying much) to Edinburgh. many thanks to Louise's parents for putting me up the last night and taking me to the airport! you're too kind and i thank you for it.

we'll stay in tonight and see if we can't catch up with that sleep that ran away from us the last few days in Paris. so night all! we'll catch you on the flipside.

    back home in scotland....
we be back. it's 2 am. we left the hostel at 6:15 pm. that's ... a long time ago. mom's working my flight out, (because she's the best) to see if i can't get back tomorrow. (we can't figure out how to call 1-800 numbers for the airline from here...i know. stupid americans.) suz and louise are going to go see ruth and jane in n. ireland and i may as well not be sitting on my suitcase in the airport for 3 days.

it's so strange to be back. cars back on the wrong side of the road. not being able to walk down the corridor and run into a bunch of folks. we know the aussies and the kiwi are out on the town right about now. terrorizing poor french people as they make their way to the market after the bars close. cause you gotta have one more beer. it's ok boys. i'm sure your livers will eventually recover. well, they might. well, hmmm...probably not the kiwi's. he's probably a goner at this point. and what've you got nick? two more weeks? God be with you.

pictures online here in a bit.

    au revoir paris
alright all. we are headed out of here. saying our goodbyes. having a grand time running about. give my regards to broadway and all that.

yeah, so. um, had one last baguette. one last crepe. one last crudite. i want another panini before we go. i've got to repack my bag because i bought you all so much stuff that i can't get it closed. i had to buy another bag. a bit embarassingg. don't know how one carries wine back with you so i've got to figure that out as well. i think on hand is probably how i'll go.

to our auzzie and kiwi friends, watch out for drop bears. mind your feet. be watchful of the doors, they close quite fast in paris. take care and happy travels. i hope not all of the hostels make you leave so early. maybe you'll actually be able to get into your rooms as well. we've had a blast and it was nice to meet you. thanks for letting the "stupid americans" tag along. we're not sooooo bad, are we?

    au revoir!!!
    1:28 pm
*sigh* last day...leaving in a few hours
we're sitting in the hostel with a new friend. regretting going out at 2 am to buy another round. we went to a pub last night and had only a few. i tried to call sharon again. girl, i can NOT catch you!!! thanks marcus for listening to me complain. we spent quite a few euro on those cards and we don't want them to go to waste. turns out everything can be bought for either expensive or tourist expensive. now, however, we may call anyone our little hearts desire because we have plenty of time left on our cards.

tony, i will stop and buy a bottle of nice cotes du rhone wine for you on our way to the metro tonight. i'm so sorry about the veuve. that was the CHEAPEST bottle we found.

um, today we went to a pablo picasso museum. let me tell you, take a little bit of pablo and a lot of hangover and you've got one INTERESTING trip to the museum. i took lots of pictures, but i'm not sure why. we stopped for chips (fries) (frites) to soak up the stomach acid and now we're trying to figure out what to do for the rest of the day. sounds like a stop at the shop for tony and then maybe one last round of chocolats or another croissant or beignet before we go.

sharon and i are weebils. she's one and i'm two. except since being here i've upgraded to 2.5. i need to eat less in scotland. maybe just sleep for a bit....

tony, i'm so sorry. your veuve costs 103 euro. that's....almost 130 american. do you want it still??

everyone else, what in the world are the new year's eve plans? i've not heard and i'm patiently waiting.

take care and carry on, as a new friend says. i've only logged on to email sharon for a bit.

and mat, toast with butter AND cinnamon and sugar. that's the best. purists miss out on all the fun stuff.

last day in paris.... pictures on web tomorrow
french keyboards, letters are all wrong. bear with me.

suz and i just finished another baguette and cheese luncheon. with some fresh fruit thrown in for you mom. tonight we are unsure if to go to a cafe and do the plat du jour or to go have pizza with the aussies or what. some of the aussies are great, some we won't miss. *

today we saw the sacre coeur, but first we thought maybe we should get lost in the arab part of town. we were the only white faces for miles. then we ran into a man from new york who's an expat and he showed us the way to the sacre coeur. onto yet another metro and we went to see the statue de liberite. it's tiny, like the size of a statue in a square. then we walked to the eiffel tower to make sure it still looked the same (it does) and then on to a market where suz bought a watch. we then metro'd home to finish our Christmas shopping, trying to find a few last things, had our lunch, found this place, and here i am.

suz and i have collected some of our favorite quotes i will share on another page: au revoir.

    out for the night
ok, the aussie's are hilarious. we're headed out to the bar with them, and they're so much fun. some of them totally understand our homesickness on Christmas Eve.

Mom, Dad, I just want you to know. we love you much and miss you. Tomorrow will be very hard waking up and not being in the house and taking turns playing Santa. but we're having a grand time and we want you to know we love you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. karen and dan too. for everyone else, excuse our sappy moment.

alright, we are planning a fantastic christmas day. we got a pizza tonight we shared with all. we are going back tomorrow because the owner was fantastic. we're going as a big group from the hostel and we're going in the AM with a girl who's terribly homesick from australia. (but, mom dad karen and dan, we wish we were with you_) so, we're trying to fill the day so we're not sad, and i think we'll do just fine.

mat, i don't know what's so great of toast, but the aussie's love it too. vegamyte? we have a baguette every mornwith some jam. it's quite good. tomorrow we'll have oranges, more candy, more beer, some wine, maybe go and get some pizza with our new friends, josh, chris, nick, nick, and andy. though they've got really tight budgets because they're travelling for ages. hopefully alyce will come too. for now, au revoir. we love you all.
    7:49 pm
    mettez a jour
Went to top of Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) today. It's beautiful, but f*** it's cold up there. Suz and I are looking at a White, white white UK when we return home, though we hope it doesn't affect travel. Um....the entire town is shutting down as I type because of Christmas Eve. It's tradition to feast until midnight when I guess we all go to bed. Suz and I got a 12 pack of beer and some candy. That's our kinda feast.

Today we had mussels and mussels a la escargot. Which is not escargot, but mussels cooked the way you cook escargot. Interesting. Good. So yeah, we're sitting with yet another group of Aussie's and they're working on their beer. Don't know what else is going on round town, but tomorrow is our picnic and we're excited.

Our French is improving. We've graduated to some directional words and a few bits of food ordering. We have also learned, get away or i'll scream. That one's gotten some use, but only in jest. Most have been friendly re: non-French speaking tourists. Some are a bit rude, but we just walk away. Because we can....

Our roommates are hilairious. They came in at half three this am and proceeded to grill us on our lives. They're Greek and quite nice, though a bit inquisitive in the wee hours of the morning.

Mom, Dad. Miss you. Love you. Got your email. Will reply later.

Tony, found your Veuve and I'll get it Monday. You're right, it's cheaper in States, but this one will be FROM FRANCE. how cool will you be?

Mat, I'm not buying you a thing because you should have come with me.
    1:15 pm
    i hate french keyboards
ok, suzn and i are in a internet cafe and she got a keyboard in english and i got one in french. somewhat hard to use. the letters are all in a different order. i am typing like greg, using only two fingers at a time.

we do not know what we wre doing next. perhaps a market; but we must find one first. i think we have tried most of the foods that were on the list given to us by friends; though suz hasn't had escargot yet. we also need to shop for our daylong picnic tomorrow and pick out a Christmas wine. there are many pastries yet to try, but they are so sweet! i think i would rather try the fromages and saussiges at the market.

our aussie friend david was talking food with us and we were talking of how US and UK bacon is different. we asked him about in australia, and he tells us he's Jewish. right, so later he is telling us about his visit to Italy and he says "i've never seen so many pictures of Jesus...i guess i should have expected that." yeah, then after we got back from... out of time!!!!!+
    12:30 pm
    haircuts, etc.
Susan is right now getting her hair cut. Brave girl. Not sure that I would, though I want to. Made promise to a friend that I would try to grow my hair back out. I'm still trying so I better stay away while she gets hers done.

This morning we woke quite early and went to Sainte Chapelle. Beautiful. Stained glass windows that are ... magnefique. The Notre Dame was breathtaking. The gargoyles are in all manners of being. Some are eating little creatures. Some look bored. Others are growling, or perhaps just yawning. I found a turtle for my Grandmother that I think she will like. I got boots today, like you do...They're very french... I had some French Chinese today. A bit different from the American version, I think. I forgot nobody is up and came to check my email. The time difference is really something. I think the New Year's Eve party will be interesting as I get in at 4:30 pm 31 Dec. We shall see.

Wish I could upload pictures. Today I got a painting as well for my apartment of the Eiffel Tower. It has just a tiny splash of red, perfect for my place. Mat, were you here, you would be laughing at me constantly, but I think perhaps laughing with me as well. Suz and I have gone in near every shop trying to find something for everyone. The guys at work are the hardest to shop for as I am not quite sure of their tastes. Dad, don't worry. I would never even DREAM to buy you something from France. I'll get you something from Scotland instead.

Tonight is Christmas Eve. As a surprise for Susan, I"m going to make her a stocking. She's a little bummed that it's not really going to be a Christmas this year, but I got her a really cool gargoyle painting that I think she'll like and I'll get her some stuff she won't buy herself.

Tomorrow, Christmas, we wake quite early to go to the Eiffel Tower and picnic there all day. We're to ride up. Some of our new friends here may join, we'll see.

OH!!!! The groceries ehre. I make susan go into all of them. They're fascinating and the open air markets . The food is sooooo good. Though I long for one of Dad's steaks, rare, with a potato and Mom's apple crisp. Must goo!!!
